Microtek Lab ScanMaker 4800 Flatbed Scanner

Strengths: none

Weakness: made by visioneer

this is a piece of junk. Scanned MAYBE 30 documents with this and the stupid lamp is stuck. I am a tech person so I have been fiddling with it and have ruled out physical hardware as the cause (glider bar sticking, etc.). I have search high and low for a solution to my problem, but no luck. I curse the day I bought this. Spend the extra few dollars and DONT BUY A VISIONEER PRODUCT. If you think...

Microtek Lab ScanMaker 4800 Flatbed Scanner

Strengths: It looks good on the table top

Weakness: Very complicated to operate and NO customer service.

I don't consider myself a dummy, but getting this scanner to operate and produce good quality scans took me months of trial and error. I can only scan about 5 pictures at a time and then it suddenly stops working. Their customer support is non-existant as I work during their office hours and the website has no usable support. I'm thinking of donating this piece of junk and buying something else.

Microtek Lab ScanMaker 4800 Flatbed Scanner

Strengths: I'm sure it said something convincing on the box.

Weakness: Technical support is one of the worst ever.

In my 10 years of experience working with computers and in the computer industry, I have not come across worse tech support. The webpage has no assistive information, emails to tech support were replied to automatically - only to redirect to the webpage or to a simple form, that when I filled out, was replied to with the answer "We cannot assist you..." yadda yadda yadda, telling me they needed...

Microtek Lab ScanMaker 4800 Flatbed Scanner

Strengths: It's easy to set up.

Weakness: It's caused me nothing but grief.

I'm on my second one. The first one stopped working on the 29th day, so fortunately I was able to replace it. Since installing the second I've had nothing but troubles with my computer as a whole. We're using Windows XP and our entire computer is hanging. We actually have to restart the computer before we can do anything. Before installing the scanner and its software I never had any problems....

Microtek Lab ScanMaker 4800 Flatbed Scanner

Strengths: Compact size, ease of use

Weakness: Marginal software, technical potholes

The Scanmaker 4800 has an attractive price and works acceptably in Windows 98se, but there are too many “little” unfinished items, in my opinion, plus one serious flaw. First, the scanner’s lamp stays on unless the power saver feature turns it off, but this feature operates only from the supplied ScanWizard5 scanning program, so if you close the program prematurely, or if you reboot, the...

Microtek Lab ScanMaker 4800 Flatbed Scanner

Strengths: Installed easily with Windows 98. Child friendly buttons. Nice Scans

Weakness: Lamp stays on.

I have a Umax Astra 1200S and found that it was difficult for my children to use. I read a lot of reviews about the ScanMaker 4800, both good and bad. I decided for the money I would give it a try. I am very happy with the scanner's auto buttons. My children can scan their art projects to email for family across the USA with out alot of help or send them to the printer. A hint is to plug the...

Microtek Lab ScanMaker 4800 Flatbed Scanner

Strengths: price and ability to scan slides

Weakness: company support

Could not get software to load( I'm running Win XP ) . Called company, waited on line for 20 minutes before speaking with a tech. She couldn't help after several minutes and transferred me to higher level. There I got a recording about prices and cut off. I next tried their email which promises response within 24-48 hours. After 60 hours I resent the email. After 96 hours I packaged the unit and...

Microtek Lab ScanMaker 4800 Flatbed Scanner

Strengths: ? - not able to use

Weakness: No support for Windows XP

I attempted installation of Microtek's ScanMaker 4800, on my Windows XP sytem. Windows XP did not recognise the ScanMaker 4800, as being compatible with it. I searched Microtek's web site for new drivers, and found NONE. There were references that XP drivers were available, but I only found circles when I tried to find them. Loads of references to new drivers, and instructions, but no drivers. I...

Microtek Lab ScanMaker 4800 Flatbed Scanner

Strengths: Easy Setup, good scans, small size, flexability

Weakness: 35mm film adapter doesn't work very well, too many buttons

Had no trouble installing on WinXP system, though initially the system took a while to recognise the scanner on boot up. The scans are clear and sharp. Scanning time is pretty good except at high resolutions. Software bundled with scanner is ok though a better graphics editing program would be nice. The photo only program is OK for pictures but not graphics. The price I paid at Office Depot was...

Microtek Lab ScanMaker 4800 Flatbed Scanner

Strengths: Easy to install and use.

Weakness: Support is a little weak

I had a microtek scanner for 3 years and no problems with it. When I purchased a new computer my old microtek wouldn't plug in. I purchased the microtek 4800 for that reason. It came with the microtek light lid 35 for scanning slides and 35mm negatives. I've scanned in over 200 slides and 50 negatives with it and I was really impressed with the results. Some of the negatives were 60 to 70 years...
