Top Notch Product

Strengths: Looks Cool, Easy to Use and Setup, Expandable

Weakness: No Networking

I have had a number of external hard drives, and tend to avoid complex tech stuff, like Raid arrays and such. Drobo was recommended to me by someone who is less technical than I am. It's extremely easy to setup and use, so that even someone as non-technical as myself can get the Drobo up and running in minutes. It's very sexy, with a great black glossy finish and looks better than most of my...

Works as advertised

Strengths: Nice, sleek footprint. Quiet operation

Weakness: Only takes SATA hard drives. Can't be networked unless using a router with a USB port (Airport Extreme, etc.)

After lots of shopping, I took the plunge and picked up a Drobo, despite the limited misgivings that I've read elsewhere (especially the fact that it can't be networked unless you have an Airport Extreme or another router that has a USB port). I have to say that I don't regret my decision one bit. My Drobo runs coolly and sits quietly on my desk, with a clear status of hard drive conditions and...

Under RAIDED!

Strengths: Simple, easy redundant back-ups.

Weakness: None so far...

I just purchased my Drobo from buyDig.com for $344 (free shipping!) I love this thing! I'd been eyeing it for a little over a year! But I was skeptical. I read a lot of criticisms and praises trying to feel it out. Once the price dropped below $350, I had to buy one. Gotta say, it's everything it's advertised to be. I bought two 500 GB Hitachi HDDs from New Egg, final damage there $171.50,...

Slow and noisy

Strengths: Completely free to add and change drives at any time without having to deal with RAID issues. Protects your data at all times. A first of its kind in many ways.

Weakness: Slow USB2 connection - often too slow to stream an HD movie (unbearable stuttering); expensive; VERY noisy if you have 4 HDDs in it.

This unit is very user friendly; I haven't been able to find any other NAS/DAS solution that allows the end user to freely change drives at any time (one at a time, anyway), without having to worry about RAID issues that can get so confusing with other arrays. It automatically backs up your data so that if a drive fails, you won't lose a thing (which naturally means you sacrifice considerable...

Drobo

THE GOOD: Protects your data without your interference; can take a 3.5-inch SATA drive of any capacity and from any vendor; hot swappable; your data is available while Drobo is formatting a new drive (even if one drive fails); runs quietly; dashboard lets you track the condition of your Drobo. THE BAD: Drobo itself is an USB-only device, and networking capability adds $200 to the bill; we would...
