It's the power supply, not the drive that fails

Strengths: inexpensive, lasts forever if you treat it properly.

Weakness: runs hot, power supplies tend to fail.

It's not the drives that fail, it's the power supplies... They fry after about 3 months-1.5 years. LaCie sells replacements for about $16-$20, dpeneding on the model. We have over 20 of these drives, and here's how you know: the drive spins up, then down - it tries to mount, data transfer will freeze, etc. Just put another power supply on it, and 9 times out of 10, it's fine. Of course, any drive...

Extermely unreliable

Strengths: Price

Weakness: Extermely unreliable

Recently my second Lacie hard drive of the same type (500GB external FireWire DRIVE) started to fail. It's exactly the same scenario as it was with a first one: clicking sounds for some period of time, than unstable work and finally complete failure. One of my two other smaller 200GB external FireWire Lacie hard drives recently produced a bunch of bad sectors. If I only new, how bad are your hard...

Great unit for the price!

Strengths: Quiet and FAST!

Weakness: Heavy

Almost right out the box, the unit is ready to go. I am using it for Final Cut Pro and so far it's great! It is quiet and requires very little installation for MAC OSX. I am happy so far with it.

LaCie Big Disk Extreme 500GB External Hard Drive

Strengths: Wonderfully and thouroughly packaged. Strong case of metal. Well written and easily understood manual. Great placarding on the unit itself.

Weakness: Needs a quick start without the warnings that make you read the manual. Connecting cables are too short. Some of the screens in the manual are out of date or do not reflect what XP requires.

It is a very fast hard drive that knows when I turn on/off my computer. Seems like a very good buy. It has good heft to it. I like that it has four cable capabilities so that it can grow with my changing computer needs.

DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE! IT FAILS

Strengths: size, features.

Weakness: extremely high failure rates. you will lose your data.

i work with drives all the time and own a lot of them. i own over 10 lacie drives of this type. they have a failure rate of about 60-70%. they all stop working eventually. some even break within a week of ownership. i have sent drives back to lacie - and they repair them and erase your data. after the warranty runs out they won't repair them at all. they become overpriced hunks of useless metal....

Great HD

Strengths: Fast, smart, reliable, quiet.

Weakness: Big, heavy.

I found this HD to be a great buy. I bought a firewire 800 (1394b) PCI card for my PC. Through FW800 this HD is extremely fast - I can tell no difference between it and my internal drives. It turns on when I boot my PC and turns off when I shut down. I didn't like that the firewire 800 cable that came with the drive is very short (maybe 3 ft). Reliability: I've never lost any data and never had...

Only time will tell

Strengths: Quality of Design and Raid 0 Capability and No Fan (Quiet)

Weakness: 1 Year Warranty with Potentially Bad Reliabilty Record and No Fan (Heat)?

There have been a lot of reviews about the bad reliability of this and other LaCie drives and considering the list on their refurb site one wonders. Personally, I've had 1 of 5 LaCie Porsche drives go bad, 1 LaCie d2 160, and I'll just have to wait and see on this one. The truth is all hard-drives have a high possibility of going bad based simply on the nature of what they do dependent on type of...

Avoid this product it will cost you

Strengths: Big Storage capacity

Weakness: Very High failure rate

7 of the 20 we purchased this year have failed. This is a poor product and the only response is a repaired drive from the company. Why would I want a bad drive to replace a bad drive. Avoid these at all costs. We now use the more reliable and expensive G-raid.

LaCie Hard Drive = Hours and Hours of Future File...

Strengths: WD Hard Drives Work

Weakness: Enclosure Fail!

LaCie does not manufacture hard drives. LaCie manufactures enclosures and the enclosure is the component which failed — therefore terrible product, terrible company! It has taken me days to figure out how to rebuild the raid, and hours for the software to recover the files — which is still in process. I have also had a LaCie DVD burner which had a power supply die and a failed DVD burner....
