Maxtor OneTouchHardDrive-120GB-7200rpm-External

Strengths: One touch backup, Size, Looks

Weakness: 1 Yr. Warranty only

This is a good size (120GB) drive that is very convenient to store backups of the main hard drive and has great speed (7200 rpm, USB 2.0) as well. The one touch backup works well and is very convenient to use especially when some new software needs to be installed on the computer. The drive is sleek looking and has a nice cool case. The only damper is the limited 1 yr. warranty that Maxtor provides on its hard drives. Overall its a great external drive.

Maxtor OneTouchHardDrive-120GB-7200rpm-External

Strengths: Ease of use, sleek finish and blue lights that match my laptop

Weakness: Power switch on back (at least there is one), and doesn't auto-power down with PC

This is a good solution for backing-up my laptop (40GB drive). I made 4 partitions of the 120 GB using Windows XP and I saved my system back-up in one dedicated area.

The Retrospect software seems fine - it was easy to make a script to auto back-up once per week, Saturdays at 1am. Just be sure to leave your PC and drive powered up, and not sleeping.

Sometimes booting up will hang if the powered drive is connected. I make sure to unplug the USB prior to booting the PC; and then power on the drive before plugging back into the USB. Little details, but it is still the easiest solution I've found for SECURE data in at least two places.

HIGHLY recommended!

Maxtor OneTouchHardDrive-120GB-7200rpm-External

Strengths: Fast, quiet, small and easy to use.

Weakness: none so far.

This unit looks pretty sleek with its metal housing and soft blue light on the "one touch" button. I transferred a little over a Gig of mp3s and pictures in 15-20 minutes. Overall I am very pleased, I can just take it to a friends house, plug in the USB and transfer tons of files in minutes.

Maxtor OneTouchHardDrive-120GB-7200rpm-External

Strengths: Very easy to install and use.

Weakness: Transfer rate slower than expected, but still very good.

Oops, this review is really for the Maxtor 5000 DV, 120 GB External Hard Drive.

The backup transfer speed does not even come close to 480 Mb/sec burst speed on USB 2.0. I averaged about 200 MB/min and maxed around 400 MB/min during the copy. It took about 3 hours to backup and verify 17.2 GB of data. That is still on par or better than backing up to a USB tape. However, it is misleading to state the max transfer speed, which is not really attainable. I wish the manufacturer's would post an average or median speed instead.

Still an excellent choice for backup.

Maxtor OneTouchHardDrive-120GB-7200rpm-External

Strengths: Ease of installation and use.

Weakness: Slow on low speed usb connection, but that was expected.

This product was just what I was looking for. It even let me create a bootable cd-rom for complete disaster recovery if I ever lost my harddrive.

Maxtor OneTouchHardDrive-120GB-7200rpm-External

Strengths: Reliable, functional, great metal case.

Weakness: Some problems with loading drivers for XP. Did not automatically load "Retrospect" program.

Great unit. Software had a glitch loading the Retrospect program. After complete "auto" installation, that portion of the file did not load. Great customer service though; quickly fixed the problem. An excellent unit for quickly backing up only the files that are new. What ease compared to the old CD-RW method!

Maxtor OneTouchHardDrive-120GB-7200rpm-External

Strengths: Does all that it is advertised to do.

Weakness: Can't find any at this point

Just received this external hard drive and I'm using it to back up my hard drives in my PC. I hope to be able to back up the hard drive in my laptop also. It appears to be a very good program for backups. I have used the DVD backup prior and have had a few problems. (Like it errors out and will not complete backup) Looks like this product will end that problem.

Maxtor OneTouchHardDrive-120GB-7200rpm-External

Strengths: tons of space, ease of use, looks cool

Weakness: actual disk space not 120gigs, only 111gig

I bought this external hard drive because my laptop could only hold 40 gigs, and once I started accumulating a lot of media, I could see that space was going to be an issue.

ALso considered were zip disks, or burning media to CD/Rs. However, having all your files only one click away is quite an advantage. If you like to download everything you see and don't want to have to worry about space, then this is what you are looking for.

As for comparison to similar products, I really didn't do much, since the Maxor was the only one available at my local Staples.

Maxtor OneTouchHardDrive-120GB-7200rpm-External

Strengths: tough, heat sink aluminum case. Very adequate software, easy installation.

Weakness: none noted thus far.

Good price grabber price from zipzoomfly. It took about 5 minutes to read the installation banner and install on win xp. Little blue light came on and I totally backed up my hard drive. I used a USB 1.1 and it wrote at about 65mb per minute. I took about 3 hours to back up. I will be getting a 2.0 USB.
I plan to use the Maxtor to transfer files to a new computer and then use for back up purposes.
I'm very well pleased. All of the cables were plenty long enough
Quiet, cool running, good software, neat blue light.

Maxtor OneTouchHardDrive-120GB-7200rpm-External

Strengths: big storage

Weakness: less than 120G

The Maxtor OneTouch Personal Storage External 120GB Hard Drive is great. It is easy to use and stable. But it does not have 120GB as it states. It only have 110 GB.
Now I have used it for one year. It never cause any problem. So I raise the rating to 4.

Maxtor OneTouchHardDrive-120GB-7200rpm-External

Strengths: Simple design, straightforward installation

Weakness: None identified

Following the instructions for the installation went fine until I got to partitioning the drive, which I had never done before. I messed up the process, and called Maxtor for support. I quickly got in touch with a product specialist who walked me through the setup. Great support! And so far everything is working extremely well.

Maxtor One Touch

Remember when $600 was a good price on a 13GB Seagate Barracuda A/V hard disk? Analog MJPEG capture rates needed 10,000 rpm drives that sounded like Everglades fan boats and were hot enough that the kids could use your PC as an Easy Bake oven when you captured video. Well, those days are long gone. In-camera digital compression has lowered the data rate necessary for acquisition, drive technology...
