I guessed wrong at first - the wound up with a GREAT...

Strengths: Easy install, works out of the box, fast, convenient 'standby' feature, small and, after rebates: cheap!

Weakness: None that I have yet discovered.

Cable modems DO age. I am sure I knew this, but it simply did not occur to me that when my broadband (cable) internet connection began behaving erratically, that a worn, old and obsolete cable modem was at the cause.
I had been using a (very good) Best Data model CMX 110 since connecting via cable a little over 4 years ago. At the time, the provider I used (then, @home) offered a rental for a fee- so I simply bought this Best Data (docsis compliant) one and, until recently, all was well. Then the problems began. Connections dropped. Data light out for periods of time. Calling my current provider (Comcast) didn't help much. They NEVER asked about my modem - simply suggesting that I recycle the power (reboot) it, which I did - and that made things OK - but for just a little while.
I began to suspect something hardware wise. First guess was wrong- I guessed the cable connecting the modem to the computer was faulty (One end had actually separated from the plug a little) - I replaced it - no change. I then suspected that the cable, itself, had been bent or compromised in some way to disturb the signal - I replaced that, too - again, no change.
Then, I ordered a 'refurbished' 3-Com cable modem from an online reseller. It was trash - and, I found out too late, not currently 'supported' by Comcast. Kicking myself for wasting some (thank goodness just a little) cash on this item, I came across an ad for a special (at Circuit City) for the Motorola modem. This time, before buying, I looked more deeply into the Comcast situation and determined that it IS supported by Comcast, and that with the rebates available (totalling $60.), the net cost to me would be $19.99 + tax. I ran over to Circuit City, bought one. Installed it in ten minutes and called Comcast to have it activated. No sweat. And I am please to report that my connection is, again, as I want it. Smooth, reliable and fast.
This modem is docsis compliant to both 1.1 AND 2.0 standards. It is about a third the size of the old Best Data box and has the neat feature of a kind of 'hold' button on top that is used to deactivate the modem when and if you might wish to do so to perform specific tasks on your computer.
I am watching the lights on the modem and smiling as I write this. No blinking - no connection interruption.... and I saved $60. on top of it.
A beautiful piece of necessary equipment at a beautiful price.

Motorola Surfboard 5120 Cable Modem: A user's...

Strengths: Ease of setup.Stable connection. Much lower dropped connections.

Weakness: Still have the occasional disconnection on the computer. Would have liked to see a new look since it is a different model, but I do not mind this look either.

I had to upgrade to this model from the previous SB5100; which I had very bad experience with due to high dropped connections. This would then lead me to have to reset the modem and pull all the plugs from it to get it back online. I was getting very tired of doing this.

I had heard that the Motorola SB5120 works much better with routers, so at this point I had exhausted all other options with nothing more to lose before going back to DSL.

I was still hesitant of how well this would work. After a long process of calling Comcast to switch the modem, I was up and running. I was able to stay online for 12 hours or so before I was diconnected on my computer. (I was using AIM to check my steady online constant time.) I check my router to see if the timer was reset as well; to my surprise it was still connected. As of this writing, I have been online for 2 days constantly, and have yet to needed to reset my modem and or router.

For those who have no problems with their service, you have no need for this modem. For those who have connection problems, have no help from Comcast, and are at a lost of what to try; I reccommend trying this modem.

Motorola SB5120

Strengths: Reliable and simple installation

Weakness: None

I purchased the Motorola SB5120 to replace my old Toshiba pcx1100, which had worked perfectly for several years. The recent cable network upgrade made it necessary to replace the old obsolete modem.

Using the ethernet port of the SB5120 for my router connection, the installation was very simple. No driver was required. A quick call to my service provider to register the new modem and everything was up and running. It has been working fine ever since.

The package includes both USB and ethernet cables. Although I cannot foresee ever using the Standby feature myself, some people may find the Standby button useful if they want to block internet traffic without shutting down the modem.

Awesome cablemodem!!!

Strengths: Reliable, stable connection.

Weakness: None

I tried several cable modems from TimeWarner, but they were all dropping connections or slow. Then I decided to used my own SB4200 (older model) that I bought previously and it has been working great so far. Recently, TimeWarner increase their speeds to 5 Mbps. I decide to buy the SB5120 to use a my primary cable modem and keep the SB4200 as a backup. I ran a speed test at dslreports.com and noticed a speed increase with the new modem. The SB4200 got around 2.5 Mbps, while the SB5120 ran at 4.2 Mbps!!!

Frequent Powerdown Required

Strengths: Great Speed, Compact Design.

Weakness: Needs Frequent (at least daily) Powerdown.

I replaced a 6-yr-old Toshiba with the SB5120 about 2 months ago, and was thrilled to see the noticeable improvement in throughput. Since then, though, unplug-and-replug cycles have become a daily routine. The modem reports the connection is still viable, but traceroutes stop at my router. I still have an IP assigned to my outbound interface, and the modem simply does not recognize the connection is somehow moribund. When my Toshiba fell into this state, it would cycle through reestablishing a connection on its own within a few minutes. The SB5120 will sit there unusable until the end of time if the power supply isn't broken.

good cable modem

Strengths: easy setup, stable and relible connection

Weakness: none so far

I have been using this modem with Optimum Online service. The setup procedure is simple. The connection is very stable so far for the 25 days since I set it up. Speed tests showed 8.5 ~ 9 Mbps download speed (this number depends more on the service from your ISP).

Motorola SB5120 Cable Modem

Strengths: Small, VERY easy to install and MUCH quicker than my old Toshiba 1100. Also, it has a one button feature that will allow you to cut off the internet from your computer/network.

Weakness: None.

I haven't been using the modem long, but it's simplicity was wonderful. The modem offers ethernet or usb connections but I'd recommend the ethernet so that you don't need to load the drivers. Cox cable just upgraded my area to the DOCSIS 2.0 technology and is fazing out the old 1.1 modems. Installation took a quick call to Cox and it was up and running in 5 minutes. Motorola has a very good reputation for quality so I don't expect any problems and I'm hoping it will last for years.

DO NOT USE WITH COMCAST

Strengths: DOCSIS 2.0, sleek design, user interface via IP address

Weakness: Consistent packet loss with Comcast network.

This is a nice modem if you are not using Comcast, I was using on another provider for quite some time with no problems, I switched and then I was sorry.

Don't rent -> buy

Strengths: Performance, reliability, price, size, color

Weakness: Can't stack horizontally

I have been renting a cable modem (SB3100) ever since signing up with the ATTBI broadband network, then AT&T Broadband, and now Comcast. I have spent $5/mo or $3/mo for 6 years and couldn't justify not purchasing this modem based on price alone.

Little did I know that I was in for a speed increase and a reliability increase! I regularly clock in at 4600 kbps, and haven't had a dropped connection yet.

The only weakness, since I was asked, is that the modem can't be stacked horizontally. I don't understand why the base can't be removed, and the case made to stack. I'm sure it is a design to avoid overheating, but this could be done.

Great modem, great price!

Motorola SURFboard SB5120 DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modem -...

Strengths: Easy setup and very fast.

Weakness: None encountered yet. Some mention that it can't be stacked and that's true, but the SurfBoards have never been stackable, so there's nothing new there.

I replaced my ancient SB3100 that I've had from the beginning and I've tripled both upload & download speeds. Whew! It did take a phone call to Comcast to register the MAC address and let them do their stuff from their end while I re-booted the modem and my routers, but it took all of 10 minutes.

Motorola SURFboard SB5120 DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modem -...

Strengths: Price (after rebate), small size, good speed

Weakness: No blinking Rx/Tx LEDs

The size of this modem is much smaller than the one I used to have. It saves me some desk space. The set up is very easy. I am not sure if it is do to the TurboDox feature but my connection speed is definitely faster. The price is not bad only after rebate which is quite easy to find. One thing I wish that this modem has is the blinking LEDs on the Rx/Tx. Although it is not too important, at least it let me know that there is data passing through ... kind of status check.

Modem sb5120

Strengths: It seems to be giving me a better performance than the Modem that was provided to me by my Cable company.

Weakness: So far, there is nothing wrong or weak about this product.

I had problem with my previous modem, which was provided to me by my Cable company.
My neighbor and someone working for the Cable company told me that they owned Motorola Modem SB5120 and they were very happy with it. It seems to work well for me too.

Strengths: Supports up to 63 computers, Compact design, Easy to maintain, Stand-by switch, and DOCSIS 2.0 technology.

Weakness: None so far.

With the upgrade of my cable internet speed to 5mbps/2mbps, this Motorola modem is handling the speed and more. I'm blazing through the internet like never before...zipping through sites after sites at MACH speed. This is a good modem. Go for it!

Motorola SURFboard SB5120 DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modem -...

Strengths: Reliable, Stable, Slim design

Weakness: No power switch.

It's better to buy this modem than renting it from the cable company. I got it for real cheap ~ $20 AR, and it's a lot better option than getting one from comcast. It has been stable so far. I experienced a couple of line drops while using it, but I suspect it was a problem on comcast's side, not the modem's. The slim design is nice, I can set it up beside my CPU on the floor and it doesn't occupy too much space like my router does.

My only complaint is that it doesn't come with a power switch, just a standby button. That is inconvenient while power cycling the modem and testing line stability.

an excellent product

Strengths: small, runs cool, take less space

Weakness: none

I just bought this modem to replace my old SB4100 which
died. I am really happy with this modem (so far), I just
plugged it in , call the provider to provision the new MAC
address and voila, I was on-line again. I checked the power
for upstream and was 25+dB (the DOCSIS calls for 30dB).
So far no issues, no lost connection or anything like that,
and I also do VOIP which is very packet-intensive (lots of
small voice packets). I read that this modem is using a TI/Libit chipset instead the SB5100 which uses Broadcom
but I think that's the only difference, functionally these
are DOCSIS 2.0 modems.

Motorola SURFboard SB5120 DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modem

Strengths: handy font-panel LEDs indicating the network status

Weakness: none

We have used the modem with comcast network and it requires no attention at all. The front pannel LEDs are very helpful to indicate if the network is working or not. There is a standby button -- easy to disconnect your internet and reconnect.

Motorola SURFboard SB5120 DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modem

Strengths: #1 brand and on the compatibility list of any cable Internet provider, top reputation, highly reliable, informative status page, the one people often turn to when their other modem has problems.

Weakness: None significant

I recently upgraded to this model when I couldn't achieve 6Mbps with my existing RCA DCM-235 modem. Swapped in the Motorola and problem solved. As a bonus, my downstream SNR increased with this modem relative to my last one (the higher this number the more reliable it tends to be). No complaints, and this brand is commonly held as the gold standard in cable modems.

It works just out of its box.Nice product, good size and esay installation makes it a pleasurable and worth buy. This is the first cable Modem i own, before that i had been using a free modem provided by my cable service company.Personally, i feel my modem have better performance than the free modem does.It runs consistantly and never get disconnected for my 24 hours online life style. To mention more is Motorola's tecniqual support department, CSRs are very helpful and patient, without their help ,i would not solve some of my system problem in my setings.

GAMER / BUYERS BEWARE OF THIS PRODUCT-inconsistancy...

Strengths: Easy to install, had it for about 14 months now, works flawlessly for the first 7 months then...............

Weakness: [GAMER / heavy internet users] beware of this product, it has a "HIGH" tendency of packet loss, and "LAGS" frequent from time to time, and requires manual reboot.

GAMER should steer clear away from product, for one it does not offer you the dependable platform of consistant pocket transfers, secondly, it will require you to manually unplug and reboot from time to time, it offers no switch button. but after all if your not a gamer and looking for a cheap modem with some reliability to get by from day to day, this is the one i would suggest you to buy.

Excellent Quality

Strengths: Solid construction, color/style, Brand, reliability

Weakness: Price somewhat more than other brands

With this modem, the connection just seems to be better. I was first impressed with the box, instructions and way the modem was packaged with wires that you need, but I am most impressed with the quality, consistant signal I get. I had a modem that came free with Time Warner digital cable, but this Motorola modem seems to work better and I bought it as a second modem for the house since I use a Vonage VoIP connection for my phoneline. I would recommend this product.

Great Product

Strengths: Light weight, compact size, easy installation

Weakness: Depending on the service provider, you might need to register the modem online. No switch-off button.

I got this Modem 3 days ago. After replacing my old SB5100, i didn't see significant download speed improvement. But it does save me $3 a month on modem rental. and I am happy with the current speed.

It comes with an installation CD. However, if you are not using USB connection, you even don't need to install the included drivers. But you might need to register it with your cable company. Just give them a call, its a very simple process. It took me only 10 minutes to have everything set up.

The modem size is perfect for my desk. But there is only one stand-by button,no switch-off.So if you need to turn off the modem , you will have to unplug its power suply.

this modem is defective?

Strengths: Speed is good. convinient. stays connected.

Weakness: Horrendous upload speed. this modem lags even worse than the sb5101.

This modem is not worth the money, at least not this model. iv had nothing but problems with this modem since day 1. im currently using my old modem because the sb5120's unacceptable upstream is not even worth the connection. Save your money for the new wireless access point cable modem Motorola put out.

I love this SB5120

Strengths: Good

Weakness: Good

Despite the hefty additional cost, I decided on the SB5120 instead of the SB5100 because it uses the TI chipset/processor. The SB5100 uses the Broadcom chip set, and has been reported to have 10/100 WAN issues. Ethernet hookup (WIN-XP) was a breeze and it works great. I especially like the standby switch to turn off the connection. As always, Newegg's service was outstanding.

Good quality

Strengths: Good quality

Weakness: Sometimes get cut

Seems to work fine ... some sites have negative comments but does not seem to be widespread. The ease of installation and the ability to quickly disconnect with the top button are the best features. Luckily, the signal strength and quality on my cable line has always been excellent. If it is not, upgrading to a newer modem may not make any difference.

Frequent Down Time Required

Strengths: Fast when working

Weakness: Requires constant power down to enable the recognition of the computer IP address.

I'm waisting a lot of time powering my modem down. Sometimes three times to get it to run properly. I'm presently searching for a replacement. I won't buy this model again.

Faster than Superman

Strengths: Installation as easy as 123. In 5 minutes I was up and running. Slick and compact.

Weakness: Non that I can find

I use it with Charter cable and really fast down load 10MBPS and upload 1MBPS. Capable of up to 40MBPS download. So far very happy with it. Extremely simple installation, replace the older Motorola modem. Would recommend if you need speed.

So glad I upgraded!

Strengths: Price, stability, small form.

Weakness: I'd agree with another reviewer that mentioned the lack of blinking Rx/Tx LEDs - they do come in handy at times.

I had been using an older model of the Motorola Surfboard modem (sb4200) and about 6 months ago it began crashing at random times and nothing I did would correct it. Finally I got fed up with it and purchased the SB5120. The price was great after rebate, less than half of what I paid for the 4200. When it arrived I set it up (which took all of 3 minutes) and went online. As a few other people have mentioned, it does seem to run cooler and load pages faster than my old modem. I've had it for a little over 2 months now and it has yet to crash or need reset or anything. It runs great and I couldn't be happier with it!

Installation was easier than expected. Haven't had...

Strengths: Good out-of-box experience with Comcast cable service

Weakness: None so far

This is my first cable modem. Has been online for about 2-3 weeks now. Hooked into a Belkin wireless-G rounter so I could shunt to a G-equipped laptop in my kitchen, one floor down. First home networking/internet sharing experience, expected a weekend-long headache of arcane network configuration----but amazingly everything worked well with minimal fuss...and ok, one call to Comcast tech support. Got a little flaky once or twice over the last two weeks, worked great after a reset. Haven't done a formal speed test, but its so much freakin' faster than my preceding dial-up, can't say I care too much at the moment. No complaints, so far.

Motorola surfboard

Strengths: Operates very well, easy to install, feel good about a quality name like Motorola.

Weakness: none yet

I have just installed the modem at home and the installation was very simple. Directions were easy to follow and I think anybody with any basic skills could install and not have any problems. It operates flawlessly and with the speed at which web pages load I believe that all the reviews i read about this product from satisfied buyers were true and this should be an easy choice for anybody looking to buy a cable modem.

Excellent Modem

Strengths: Small foot print. Easy set-up.

Weakness: None.

This is an excellent modem. Very easy to set-up using the connection wizard. Black in color, lightweight, and a very small footprint allows it to be placed almost anywhere. I really like the stand-by button. Ships with ethernet and universal serial bus cables.

Motorola SURFboard SB5120 - Good Value Modem

Strengths: Easy to install, slim, light and reasonably priced.

Weakness: I recently bought the modem and so far I don't really see any weaknesses. I heard this modem disconnects intermittently but I haven't experienced it personally.

This modem works good so far. I had some trouble getting it to connect at first because the download activation file from my cable company would not execute. After a quick phone call, the cable technician registered my modem and I was surfing away. I bought this modem to replace the rental from my cable company. To me, the modem will pay for itself in a year's time or less. I highly recommend this modem to those looking to replace your rental or existing unit. If you plan to use high speed cable internet for more than a year, stop wasting your money renting and buy one!

Good Modem

Strengths: Does what its supposed to do. Simple to setup, simple to use.

Weakness: None

I have pretty much no complaints with this product. It does exactly what its supposed to: you plug it into your computer, your cable outlet- and boom! You've got internet. Its really simple, and I haven't had any problems with it. I don't know whether its the cable company or the modem, but some times the service slows down, but most of the time it works fine. I highly recommend this modem, though if you're going to get cable internet service, most come with a free modem anywys.

Motorola Surfboard SB5120 Cable Modem

Strengths: Very Fast. Easy setup. $17 after rebate with Comcast is a great price.

Weakness: None so far.

The modem is amazingly fast and works well with my wireless router. With all the deals on the web, it is actually cheaper to have cable/dsl service vs dialup and you can't go wrong with this great cable modem from motorola.

Motorola SURFboard SB5120

Strengths: Very fast and easy connection on Cox Cable. Easy setup as well. Can't also complain about the free after rebate price. Alternative USB connection is also a plus.

Weakness: I wish it would come in a different color to match my other equipments.

Overall, I am very happy with this modem. So far I haven't encountered any problem. I am getting a Pre N router this week and hopefully this modem will work with it well.
