Maxtor accidentally makes the perfect desktop drive.Strengths: Huge storage, very reliable, fast and quiet. Weakness: Only available in huge sizes so there is no low-cost option. This drive is actually intended for big companies to quickly backup huge amounts of data before it gets transferred to tape backups. Try to ignore that little oddity, though, this drive easily holds the top spot for desktop use. It's not the very fastest, a distinction still held by the 74GB, 10000 RPM Raptor, but it is the best. These drives cost less than Raptors, hold four times as much data, run much quieter and a are lot cooler. It's a little known fact that you need active cooling for Raptor drives, meaning extra fans, noise and expense. There is no such requirement for the MaXline III. Only enthusiasts should consider Raptor; for most gamers and mainstream users the MaXline is a much better choice. Because big companies want reliability above all, this drive is very well built and has a 1,000,000 hours before failure duty rating and can be left on 24/7, unlike most desktop drives. 82% of readers found this review helpful. Nov 18, 2005 I can't help but comment on ". . . no low-cost option." with an average cost of about $150 for a 300 GB drive. . . I guess you don't remember the days of $1999.95 for a 10 MEGABITE drive - - That was "no low-cost option"!

Apr 14, 2006 Heh. Apparently I'm younger than you. When I started ogling computers I remember my friend and I marveling at the new Western Digital Caviar drives only costing $1 per megabyte. Ahh, the good ol' days!

Apr 14, 2006 Funny thing...... because of the price wars which drove the cost of HD's down so much, most HD's are too unreliable. My old 10 GB Western Digital STILL works to this day, but i've gone through countless 120gb WD's.............

Good hard drive at a good price; make sure you have...Strengths: Price & Capacity Weakness: OEM edition; does not have any hardware or software included I purchased this hard drive through Newegg.com and was somehow under the impression that it would at least come with a serial ata cable; since these are not as common as the good old standard, the IDE. Needless to say it didn't, so a separate purchase of a SATA data cable will be necessary (at least with the OEM edition I purchased at NewEgg). Also, 4 course-thread screws will also be in order for mounting purposes (not included with mine). Other than that it seems like a solid hard drive; the true test will be in time. 50% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Jul 13, 2006 This is NOT a SATA II drive. Go to maxtor website.

Sep 25, 2006 When buying from newegg.com, if an item is "Retail" it will come in it's original box just the same as if you bought it in a store. If it says "OEM" this means you are buying JUST the item you see, NOTHING MORE. No manual, cords, etc.

Great capacity for MatorStrengths: Great capacity, ATAII, 16MB Weakness: None I like it. I install it as my 2nd HD on my desktop. The installment is easy. You almost cannot hear noise from this HD. The speed is faster than my Seagate 160G HD. 16MB is definitely an add for this hard drive. It comes with 5 year warranty which is better than the retail kit. It worked for enterprise backup. You can trust it if you always want to download or backup file. 50% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? TopAdvertisement

Large Capaticy, Decent Price, Quiet & Great Quality
Strengths: Good value; quiet; fast; awesome warranty
Weakness: MaxBlast software flaky with Norton GoBack
I've only had this for a couple of days, but thus far, I am very happy. I am not a power user at all, I mainly made the switch from Parallel ATA (PATA) drives to Serial ATA (SATA) drives for their convenience and forwards compatibilty. Clearly, PATA is on its way out. SATA has the advantage of being faster, and more convenient for interfacing and hookup (one power cable & a simple serial cable, not that bulky 80-pin ribbon cable!). This HDD replaced my last parallel drive, so I am now a SATA only guy! Installation was a no-brainer, even after downloading the software from the Maxtor site. I would recommend using the windows version of MaxBlast 4, as it's easier to use. I did have some issues with Norton GoBack being installed on my system, but that was a system specific thing. I was never able to get the MaxBlast software to work, even after disabling/removing/rebooting GoBack from my computer! Ended up using Windows Disk Management to format/install the drive. Not sure why, but it wasn't worth fooling with.
I copied over the 200gb of data from my PATA drive to the new SATA drive in about 40-minutes, then removed the last PATA drive from my system for good!
I was impressed with how quiet the drive was. I added another drive, and didn't notice any audible difference. Even when I was doing massive copying of data!
A big plus with this particular Maxtor drive is that it is considered a near-Enterprise product, which means it is manufactured with top of the line components, and comes with a 5-year warranty! And to top it off, you don't have to keep your old receipt around, as the warranty is synced with the S/N. Just enter the S/N on the maxtor web-site, and it tells you how long the warranty is. Cool! This is a great advantage, as the generic retail Maxtor drives that you buy at the stores cost only a bit less, but only come with a 1-year warranty! Bravo, Maxtor!!
In summary, this drive provides a decent value, when you consider the density, quiet operation and 5-year warranty.
