Coolpix 7900

Strengths: Many wonderful features.

Weakness: Firmware Version 1.2 limits recording time when using a high speed 2 gb sd. If you have 1.1, do not upgrade!

I made a big mistake of updating my firmware. Before the update, I had over an hour of recording time at the highest quality. Other than that, it is a great camera.

Nikon Coolpix 7900 7.1 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Portable size & weight, image quality, ease of use

Weakness: relatively short rechargeable battery life, memory card not included

Having owned several Nikon film SLRs (FEII, N60, N80) but used other digital cameras (Sony, Canon, Fuji, Kodak), I was nonetheless pleasantly surprised by the functionality and versatility of the 7900. In bright and average outdoor light, the camera produces exceptionally sharp images with vivid colors. Macro Shots of the tiger lilies in the front yard yielded professional quality images with super-rich colors and amazing detail. Not what I expected from a small box slightly bigger than a deck of cards. Even more amazing is the 7900 excellent performance in tricky low-light situations. The flash works well indoors in the conventional mode (I have encountered no problems with slow flash recharge waiting period that users of the 5600 been complained). But the camera in flash-low-light combo mode can capture images that light up a completely dark room or perfectly combine brightly-lit foreground subject and dimly-lit evening skyline. For those who prefer natural coloration in low-light situations, the 7900 with slow shutters and ISO50 capability can work wonders when mounted on a tripod. TIP: use the manual white balance function to achieve correct coloration.

Although not a digital camcorder by designation, the video quality produced by the ancillary video recorder in Quicktime format is surprisingly good (rivalling my SONY HC65 MiniDV camcorder); the audio is average. A 512MB card can hold only about 10 minutes of video.

The included RCA connection jacks enables instant slide-show and video replay on a TV screen; a very handy accessory.

Some reviews have claimed that the body is made of metal. It looks more like black plastic to me. The image quality at 5 and 7 mega pixels are indistinguishable for the most part; I'd recommend the 5900 which is just as good for good deal less. Unlike the 5600/7600 series, the 5900/7900 cameras do not accept standard disposable dry-cell batteries. The included lithium rechargeable discharges pretty quickly (2hrs to recharge) and the AC adapter is not included; so with power is the main constraint on the operation of this camera.

Overall, the 7900 is a very nice camera with much to offer for beginners and enthusiasts alike. It's easy to carry and easy to use and offers advanced functions for those who want to be more creative without having to worry about f/stops and shutterspeed. A bigger LCD screen would be nice. . ., but overall satisfied.

Nikon Coolpix 7900 7.1 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: 7MP, Great image quality in very light, compact, easy to use camera. Lot's of options and pre-set scene modes

Weakness: None

This camera is so compact, you can carry it in your pocket.
It's amazing it can take such great quality photos. I've tried it indoors, outdoors, at daytime and nightime, with and without flash. Good results in all conditions, using preset scene modes. No redeye. And so easy to use.
The movie mode produced the best video quality I've ever seen, with excellent sound quality. The scene modes are quite extensive. For example, if you are in portrait mode (for taking photos of people), it lets you select whether the subject is centered, or on left or right side, or is if there's 2 people; you can then select face priority, which will detect the faces to focus in on. The photos I've taken have all had great color, and are very sharp, even when cropped or enlarged. I highly recommend this camera.

Nikon Coolpix 7900 7.1 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Very user friendly. Great camera for amature-semi proffesional. Has many great features and different settings which help make your pictures come out as if you were a proffesional photographer.

Weakness: Battery door seems kind of cheap-no other weaknesses.

Camera is excellent. One of the best if not the best in its class. Has many different modes for every occassion. Example, if your at a party or at a fireworks show, you set this camera for each occasion and the pictures come out very good. When taking a portrait it has features such as, on the screen it shows a circle and body (representing a human) so when you want to take a pic of someone, you line up the circle with the persons face and so on, helping to get the best shot possible. Has a lot of manual controls for controling white balance, shutter speed, focus, etc... Also has features which reduce noise in pictures. Has the best red eye reduction I've ever seen in a camera. Small and compact yet it seems strong. Battery life is terrific-lasts forever. Zooms and focuses very fast. Software with camera is pretty good too has a feature to get rid of red eye which works amazingly. Lets you record movies with sound for as long as you have memory for. Overal A+

Nikon Coolpix 7900 7.1 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: vERY NICE FEATURES, EASY TO USE ESPECIALLY FOR A COMPACT CAMERA

Weakness: DOESN'T HAVE A MANUAL SHOOTING MODE. MOST PEOPLE USE AUTOMATIC, AND THERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU CAN CHANGE, BUT LIKE I SAID NO MANUAL SHOOTING MODE.

BUT IT IS A GREAT CAMERA OVERALL. THE D-LIGHTING, MAKES THE PCITURES COME OUT GREAT! PLEASED WITH THIS CAMERA. VERY EASY TO USE, SO ITS REALLY USER FRIENDLY, NOT TO MENTION IT'S PRETTY SMALL TOO.

Coolpix 7900

Strengths: Quick start up, excellent photo quality, light weight, easy to use for the beginner, plenty of options for the advanced photographer, easy user interface

Weakness: some of the options are buried in the menu options, wish it had more optical zoom capability

This is my second digital camera (my first was the Sony DSC-P10). I like this one much better. From power-on-to-first-photo is about 4 seconds, making you ready to catch any photo on the fly. The time between shots (when using the flash) are also very quick (1-2 seconds). The camera fits in your hand very nicely. It is small enough and light enough to stick just about anywhere. The battery charges in less than two hours. The view finder is a bit ‘noisy’, but don't let that fool you, the picture quality of the shots are very good. The camera only has 3x optical and 4x digital zoom. This isn't bad for most candid shots, but for outdoors stuff and other events, a bit more would be nice. The price I paid, $310 (thank you BuyDig.com) is an outstanding deal.

I recommend this camera to anyone.

Nikon Coolpix 7900 7.1 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: super compact, great picture quality, a lot of features, battery life, excellent very user friendly menu display

Weakness: body looks not so valuable.

This is my third digital camera that I have bought and found this one to be the best.
It provide a lot of features (4 assist and 12 scene modes) that allows me to take
professional quality pictures with this pocket sized camera. Other than that it the easiest
to use with friendly display menu. I was impressed to be able to take great quality pictures
by using such features like the D-Lighting, Face-priority Auto focus.

First Digital Camera- Two thumbs up

Strengths: Amazing picture quality, camera is perfect for point & shoot.

Weakness: Hard to take night pictures without the flash and just using available lighting.

Pictures at highest quality can be zoomed in to find tiny details not normaly seen. Movie mode is awesome and great quality which can be seen on a big tv and not guess it came from a camera that was meant for pictures. This camera has an enourmous amount of features, which I have yet to try all of them yet. But I am enjoying just using the camera with the amount of features I know how to use. I would recommend this camera to anybody looking for a high quality point and shoot camera. I coupled mine with a 1GB SD card and I have been taking pictures and video without any worries.

willyg125, question; how much video can you shoot with the 1GB SD card? Anything else I need to make it compatible with this camera? I am looking for a small size camera with good quality photos. I am semi-torn between buying a camera and a video camera. Can this work well as both with the 1Gig? Thanks!!

I have found that a 512mb sd card will hold 7 min. of video so I would expect a 1gb sd card to hold about 14. If you want to do video buy a video camera. Image and sound quality will be a lot better. If you just want to take quick clips when you kid does something funny then this camera will work.

Great Little 7.1mp Camera

Strengths: Great high resolution - user interface is easy - nice low light images

Weakness: I wish it was a little thinner. I just saw that Nikon released some thiner point & click with high mp...Screen could be bigger but it works well

This camera takes great pictures. I have been a cannon person for a long time and took a chance on this. I've been very happy so far with the first 1000 photos I have taken. I would highly sugget this camrea for any user who is looking to get into the digital market with a camera that has high mega-pixles.

nikon 7900 is great!

Strengths: size, weight, image quality. red eye reduction is pretty for this size camera. very user friendly!

Weakness: no manual mode.

I am so glad my friend introduced me to this camera. I absolutely love the image quality! Images come out with little to none purple fringes. You need not to worry about over exposure of images either. Macro shots resulted in excellent photos. D-lighting and auto focus is also another plus on this compact camera. Shutter speed is somewhat quick and I didn't seem to find the flash slow as other users did. I love the ergonomics of the camera.

This camera packs alot of punch for the price!

Excellent camera

Strengths: Multiple image modes, video plus audio recording, internal memory, small size, 7MP

Weakness: Only 3x optical zoom

Excellent camera with multiple image modes that allow you to choose the best one for your current light and image conditions. You will need to read the manual to be able to use the most advanced features.

Very Good Camera for the Amateur Photographer

Strengths: Easy to use. Manual explains instructions reasonably well. The d-lighting feature works great.

Weakness: Although long battery life - No warning when battery dies, the camera just shuts off. Red Eye is bad. Software can improve on the computer.

I wanted a camera that would allow editing and larger prints. I researched and value wise this is the best.
I download my pictures to the computer from a card slot on my printer and the software program does not recognize it. This isn't really a problem because I have my own software editing program. If I need to use the software Nikon provides I just import the picture to that program.
I am very happy with this camera.

Decent little camera

Strengths: Small, light, 7.2mp, viewfinder

Weakness: Can not plug power cord directly into camera to charge/and or use camera. Not the best at keeping accurate colors with indoor lighting.

I am pleased with how the menu is set up. Easy to navigate and use. I have not taken any real pictures yet but really struggled to find a combination of settings to allow accurate colors when taking photos indoors at normal light, not just at low light. Need to get more experience with camera to find it's other quirks and positives.

great camera

Strengths: good photos, not that slow as tolled

Weakness: easy to use but works like a bigger camera

just try it! you can make long videos, it is really nice to use, small but not that much that you can’t see what you are doing. I’ve read some reviews of other cameras and looks like the biggest disadvantage by this one is the battery. I’m using it till a month and I haven’t got any problem you just must change regularly the rechargeable battery and the disadvantage is gone. it is really a good camera! I recommend it

Nikon Coolpix 7900 7.1 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Small size, feature set

Weakness: Image and video quality

I just picked up this camera. So this should be considered a preview instead of a review :) But since I am going to return it immediately its the best I can do.

Basically, I bought a Pentax Optio S two years ago and have since been looking for a replacement. Sad to say, I am still looking. The last contender was the Canon S500.

My #1 priority with any camera is always image quality. While most novice think of image quality in terms of pixels and sharpness I think of image quality in terms of noise and dynamic range (the ability of the camera to capture a wide range of light, from the brightest to the darkest areas of a scene.) For example, the Canon 300D is only 6M but the quality of its images will blow away the current crop of 8M pro-consumers cams.

I left the Nikon on the default settings, only turning noise reduction on. I shot some pics in both 7M and most 3M because my Optio is 3M. This is just my initial impression...

The pics were OK but nothing to write home about. I would say they were about 20% better than the Optio in general. Sorry, but after waiting two years, that's just not good enough. In general the camera does a much better job out doors than inside, closeup than wide-angle. (This is usually the case with most small cams.) Noise level is good but it does not approach the pro-consumer level e.g. Nikon 8800.

The movie mode is acceptable but has big problems with fast panning or moving objects. On indoor videos, noise and dittering is a big problem. Don't expect anything approaching a cheap DV video camera here.

So, the bottom line. Is it better than the Optio S? Yes. Is it two years and $150 better...no. For anyone looking for a small point-and-shoot camera the Optio S is still a better bargain and don't forget its still smaller and lighter than anything else out there.

That's it! I give up. I'm moving up to the pro-consumer level. I guess its the only way to get the quality I want. The Olympus C-8080 and Sony DSC-V3 is high on that list...

This camera is trying to destroy Nikon's legacy.

Strengths: Good pictures with bright light.

Weakness: Like other rater said, this camera has very weak flash. And no battery power left after low battery message.

This camera is trying to destroy Nikon's legacy. I should read Consumer Reports magazine's rating. The flash is very weak. I tried to take pictures with a slaved flash light to enhance the light condition like I took picture with old film camera, but the way did not work. I do know how many the fration of second of shutter speed this camera gives for flash. I tried every features to improve the pictures with dark light. This camera is trying to destroy Nikon's legacy.

Nikon Coolpix 7900 Digital Camera Review

Announced in February and released in April, the Nikon Coolpix 7900 is still a candidate for the 2005 holiday shopping season. Its small black body makes it one of the more stylish Coolpix models and it packs an impressive 7.1 effective megapixels onto its 1/1.8” CCD. The Coolpix 7900 is the big sister of the Nikon Coolpix 5900 and has many of the same features, but the 7900 boasts a larger...
