Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 60 GB Internal Hard Drive -...

Strengths: good price..cd installition disk included

Weakness: somewhat incomplete instructions

Installed Maxtor HD on my computer recently. My first attempt at working on my computer. Jumper settings clearly marked, but directions for booting from the included CD are not crystal clear. Overall, feel like this is a good purchanse. Hard drive runs very quietly

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 60 GB Internal Hard Drive -...

Strengths: Great 133 7200rpm Drive, never had any problems with it so far, dependable data storage and great main drive

Weakness: could always be cheaper

A little bit faster than my old 100 2mb 7200rpm 40gb drive from Maxtor which locked up after a good 3 years of screaming hot tempuratures from my old room that wasn't insulated at all.

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 60 GB Internal Hard Drive -...

Strengths: Speed Quiet Price Warm to the touch

Weakness: 1 year warranty

Real world read/write continuous transfer speed: 7 to 9 MB/sec, depending on where the data is located on the drive platter. Transfer of a 600 MB image file under the same condition is faster...around 13.6 MB/sec. Perhaps this is because we're dealing with just one file. All Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 HDs come with a high density 80 GB drive platter. Perhaps a software modification will bring the total capacity of this HD to 80 GB.

Boot time is faster by about 9%, when compared to the old Quantum LCT 30 GB drive. The new Maxtor drive is very quiet, but not whisper quiet like the Seagate Barracuda IV/V series.

Poor quality, poor warrantee

Strengths: None (A strength is supposed to be something better than other brands/models. All drives come with useless install CDs!)

Weakness: Failed within 1.5 years. 1 Yr warrantee.

Maxtor brand is not know for being super fast, super quiet, or durable. I think the only way they must stay in buisness is by having $50 rebates on $90 drives at office depot and stores alike. Get ready to pay twice when you have to replace it. Even if your origional and the replacement both last for 2.5 years (making the cost to you the same as the Seagate even with a $50+ rebate), you would still have been better off price wise to orgionally purchased a Seagate.

Go with Seagate. They have a 5 year warrantee. If you are looking to have any kind of raid system (multiple drives) definatly go only with Seagate. If you buy three drives, at least one is likely to go out in five years even with good brands.

While my maxtor drive was working, it was run in a well cooled machine (with empty bays on both sides of it), and it was a secondary drive, so there was very little activity. A failure this soon is totally unacceptable for a hard drive. I have a beaten up WD (not recommending WD by any means) 3G drive that is 8+ years old and it is serving as my boot & swap paritions for my linux server today.

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 60 GB Internal Hard Drive -...

Purchased this drive from a good online dealer, drive wouldn't even format. Returned it, got another one; this one finally did format (after two attempts), but crashed within 2 hours of initial OS install. Both started making clicking sounds right before the BIOS failed to even recognize that there was a drive on the board.

Needless to say, I'm not a Maxtor fan after this. I'm sticking with Seagate drives.
