Strengths: Easy to use.
Weaknesses: Price.
Summary: Unfortunately, it seems like every year the price on TurboTax products keeps going up and up. I remember when the Deluxe version was only like $29. :( Regardless, this is another great product from TurboTax. Federal and state in one box. Step by step instructions. So easy to use!

1 Star ReviewTurbo Tax Deluxe only works on OS 4 or higher!
Strengths: No strengths.
Weaknesses: Does not work on OS 3.9 or lower. Does not support filing for a Trust (1041)
Summary: When H&R Block in 2005 dropped TaxCut for the Mac, I turned to the only Mac tax software on the market: Turbo Tax, which I used in 2005 and 2006. I found it reasonably good. So I pre-ordered the 2007 version and received the CD in the mail in mid-December. Yesterday (2/15/07) I installed it and tried to open it. No luck! I went online to their website and learned that TT for 2007 will only work with OS4 or later (I am running OS 10.3.9 on an e-Mac). Their explanation is that they wanted to incorporate features that only OS 4 allows. What a bunch of crap!

There are undoubtedly millions of Mac owners like me who are still running OS 10.3.9 or earlier. It is absurd that they would stop supporting these earlier versions so quickly.

So I had to e-mail Intuit and arrange for a refund.

Fortunately, H&R Block is back in the business of publishing TaxCut for the Mac and it does support 10.3.9 (though not earlier!). It is pretty good software, though it unexpectedly quite several times when I tried to register, so I gave up on that, and crashed after I thought I had successfully imported personal information from TurboTax 2006, which led to my having to manually re-enter all my personal data into the 2007 TaxCut. I continue to be nervous about using it, but TurboTax gives me no choice.

I am also disappointed with MacWorld for not alerting its readers to the fact that TurboTax requires OS 10.4 or later.

Strengths: Save hours of work
Weaknesses: Too many solicitations for upgrades.
Summary: Have used TurboTax in the past- '07 TurboTax was as effortless in its use, and extremely productive! I am not surprised- this makes tax preparation a breeze (asuming you have all documentation and receipts available.) Fantastic product.

Strengths: Makes an unpleasant task much easier
Weaknesses: Price
Summary: I have used TurboTax for many years and it certainly simplifies a very painful task. At one point I used an accountant but it took almost as much work to gather the data for him as it does to enter into TurboTax. Documentation and on-line help are generally good. My major complaint is the price keeps going up year after year for software you only use once!

2 Star ReviewThe fee is getting ridiculous
Strengths: TurboTax is a great product and makes tax filing much easier
Weaknesses: Errors can occasionally be introduced when you jump around. It's best to go from start to finish in order.
Summary: TurboTax is the best tax-prep software on the market. Unfortunately, Intuit knows that. They keep jacking up the prices, not just on the software, but the add-ons as well. e-filing is now $17.95 per return ($35.90 if you e-file your state return)! As far as I can tell, intuit has a cost of about $0 for that. If you buy a product without a state return included, watch out. the price for an add-on state is $29.95!

I'm fed up with intuit. This very well might be the year folks throw their hands up and quit using this ridiculously priced software.

3 Star ReviewTurbotax Deluxe with State
Strengths: Is easier than doing taxes manually. Prevents math errors. Allows importing of brokerage information that can save days of work.
Weaknesses: Support is horrible. Takes forever to reach them and then you get incorrect information. This has happened for past 3 years.
Summary: For an average tax filer, using Turbotax is much easier than trying to fill out forms and follow printed instructions. However, for my complex taxes that run more than 20 pages, every year there is a bug that takes me many hours to resolve. For example, last year I tried a simple correction to the taxable interest I received from a broker, and without any indication Turbotax allocated the correction between taxable interest and non-taxable interest. This caused incorrect tax computations.

Another annoying bug is that it lets one enter a list of stocks donated to a charity and then truncates them on the tax form when it is printed. You have to guess at what will fit, renter the information and reprint your taxes.

Try not to call for support unless you have an easy question as an inexperienced user.

The software begins with an annoying screen that forces you to register. It keeps coming up until you register and then if you don't want them to contact you, you have to spend time updating your profile.

The product is difficult to use but taxes are a complicated issue. Personally I find a number of features poorly designed.

The main reason I use the product is because it is the only program that my broker allows for importing data. This saves me so many hours of time that it offsets the time I spend resolving Turbotax problems and cursing Intuit. For five years I have not found an easy way to send Intuit a detailed explanation of a problem and get a resolution, even if the resolution is in a future year.

I use it because it is better than manually doing taxes but I have many problems with it every year.

Strengths: Very clear and easy to follow. Made doing my own taxes super easy.
Weaknesses: None.
Summary: I've been scared of doing my own taxes for years but I finally decided I'd try it this year. TurboTax make it easy! When I was done I was so relieved and I couldn't believe that was all there was to it.

Strengths: Easy to use; imports previous year information; imports your tax information from external sources (like brokerage, bank, payroll); great assistance with donations to charities.
Weaknesses: None
Summary: I did my taxes by hand for many years. But once I started investing and having more complicated income it became very difficult. I settled on TurboTax 10 years ago and have been using it ever since. This year was the first time I was able to import information directly from my brokerage. It was fantastic! And the charitable deductions now use eBay to assign values to clothing and other items.

The state module makes quick work of a very confusing Maryland form. That alone is worth the price.

TurboTax is the only program I've ever used so I can't compare it to other products.

Strengths: has steadily improved; excellent prompts for necessary information; easy to return to any portion of the filing process to edit or update entries
Weaknesses: "instant chat" with a computer much inferior to live chat with person--very limited use
Summary: Biggest dissapointment: Intuit has diminished the "deluxe" version to force users with rental property to puchase a more expensive version of their software. Since they have a captive audience (one must purchase new copies of the app yearly) and are genning excellent returns for this "case cow", they are destroying all user loyalty.

They fail to acknowledge what one can learn from their helpful support staff (Indian): that one can still use schedule E (rental income), accessing one's previous tax return, using this "supposedly diminished" deluxe version of TT.

2 Star ReviewIntuit TurboTax support not responsive to bugs
Strengths: Can't think of any at this point.
Weaknesses: Intuit's tech support and their methods to allow (or not in this case) users to report bugs and get them fixed has again made it difficult to get the taxes done.
Summary: I found and reported using their support page "email" method a problem related to "view forms" printing that produces an error dialog with error code 113. I got a non-responsive email reply and when I responded to that e.mail I got a reply that says "You have reached an unmonitored e-mail box. If you need assistance, please visit our support website at support.turbotax.com...."

I went to the support site and tried to get to the place where I could feed all of this back to them including words that they were non-responsive. I found that the "email" option is gone.

So, now they have removed ALL methods for users to report BUGS!!! AND they aren't addressing the bugs!!!

Time to switch tax prep software vendors.

Strengths: easy and fun to use
Weaknesses: had some unique areas of taxation this year which I could not address with Turbo Tax
Summary: Had fun using, but could not satisfactority resolve some issues with the Turbo Deluxe - don't know if I needed to use the Turbo Primier or if it was my tax situation or the user, myself.

Strengths: Simple to set up, excellent prompts for information, easy access to additional information, great guidance for less-common financial problems, great price (with rebate)
Weaknesses: Difficult to skip directly to a specific section or field
Summary: Overall, this is a great product. I don't have very complicated taxes, but there are some minor difficulties. TurboTax dealt with all of them without a hitch, and even helped me find an extra deduction of which was unaware. I got state with the deluxe version, and filling in those fields were just as easy-- especially since it auto-filled all the personal data. This was a great way to save time and ensure that everything was done correctly. It also allows you to quickly see how alternative deduction methods will affect you.

Strengths: Quick program, good interview process, and helpful comparison to 2006 taxes.
Weaknesses: High price and no mfg rebate.
Summary: TurboTax is the only program I trust with which to prepare my taxes. I've used it for years and been very satisfied. I like how it makes it simple to compare this year's to last year's final numbers. Overall it's a good program for novices and more experienced people alike. I find it most helpful to go through the interview process and then double check the forms myself.
