Blazingly Fast 3gb/s sata 2Strengths: Best sata 2 transfer speed-- 5YR hitachi warranty Reliable and quiet operation Weakness: none In the past 6 months i have built 30 desktop PC's and have used numerous drives from-Seagate,Maxtor,West Digital,Quantum. And none come close to the speed and performance of this Hitachi drive. Using Hitachi's software you can enable sata II transfer option and double transfer speeds up to 3gb/s It also has a 5 yr warranty. You cant do better than this drive for the price. 100% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Great DriveStrengths: Space, speed, compatability Weakness: 7200 rpm max I've used the 7Kxxx series Hitachi drives for the last three years. They have proven very reliable even in my overheating server room. The new 500 GB drives work well with my 3Ware raid controller (access light and all) & together show a write speed of just over 70MB/sec using 'dd' under linux. 100% of readers found this review helpful. Hidden problems built into this drive!Strengths: Lots of storage Weakness: The HDD LED feature does not work; this is a firmware problem that has been known to Hitachi for some time. Also, these drives and Hitachi's InfoTool do not work properly w/Promise SATA300 TX4 card. The HDD LED feature does not work; this is a firmware problem that has been known to Hitachi for some time, and they have yet to do anything to fix it. You may guage HDD access using pins on the motherboard, but if you use a drive cartridge (e.g., a CRU Dataport 10), you will not see any indication of HDD access on the cartridge's in-built access LED! Additionally, when the Acoustic Management feature of the drive is ENABLED AND the drive is attached to a Promise SATA II controller card (e.g., the SATA300 TX4), the drive suddenly has horrible seek times, and in my case, these actually corrupted a clean Windows XP SP2 OS to the point where it was necessary to re-clone to the drive from an image! Moreover, Hitachi's "Feature Tool", which is required to change drive settings such as SATA 1.5Gb/s versus 3.0GB/s mode, will NOT recognize Promise controller cards, and thus it is necessary to make changes to the drive's settings using ports in-built on the motherboard. However, this can be a HUGE problem if the drive has been set to 3.0 GB/s mode AND your moterboard either a) has only 1.5 GB/s ports (hence the need for a controller card) or b) has no SATA ports at all. ADVICE: Unless you will be satisfied using this drive ONLY in SATA I mode only, you should NOT purchase it for use with a motherboard that lacks in-built SATA II ports. Also, if you plan to go ahead and use this drive with a Promise controller card, be aware that you will not be able to change the drive's settings in your system once you have "graduated" to 3.0GB/s mode; rather, you would have to make such settings changes within a different system that has a motherboard with in-built SATA II ports. Finally, DO NOT enable the MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDED Acoustic Management feature if you plan to use the drive with a Promise controller card, as this will royally screw your system! Unfortunately, when Acoustic Management is DISABLED, which is what you would need with a Promise controller, the drive is VERY rackety (noisy)! For all this, I give the drive three stars! Hitachi needs to get on the ball and work with Promise to ensure that its Feature tool will function with Promise's controller cards as well as to fix the serious performance failure that occurs when Acoustic Management is enabled. Moreover, Hitachi needs to fix their RIDICULOUS HDD LED FAILURE issue in the drive's firmware (SHAME ON HITACHI for letting this get out the door). 89% of readers found this review helpful. Stable and FastStrengths: Fast. Big Cache. Lots of space. Weakness: The first two Arrived DOA I've now got three of these in a stripped array. Each drive proveds 465.75 GB for an array of 1.37 TB. The Array has been running for a while and I've moved 1.1 TB of data back and forth from the drives several times with no issues. I'm ordering two more now to expand the array. 89% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Finally got 1/2 TB solution with the optimum...
Strengths: Got the highest capacity drive, suitable for NAS & SAN boxes. Fastest data transfer speed. Optimum performance in Multi-drive systems.
Weakness: Nothing
It really work in the AV system. Example: we put it with the Audio Video company where they are capture the image, storing it and at the same time broacasting that image to the users. So there it works smoothely whereas other drives fails. Because of the big buffer size and double transfer speed, the performance of the drive, increases.

your comments regarding the hitachi 500gb sata-II
is precise and well spoken as it is a great product and would make an excellent upgrade to any computer.
fast access to data and huge(500gb) storage is
like having your cake and eating it too. i just bought 2 of these for my cousin's computer building project
which will amount to a whopping full terabyte of
storage which should last many years despite the
ever increasing storage needs.
