Crashed after 7 months

Strengths: Quiet, a lot of space

Weakness: Gets hot soon, needs absolutely a dedicated fan!

I read a similar review:
AND QUESS WHAT? I had a similar situation but my disk crashed after 7 months, I kept it as died hopefully that some day I will extract my very important photos with my fiance and future wife.
The drive comes with 1 year warranty. Exactly 2 days prior to my warranty expiring, the hard drive crashed. Phone support is only M-F during normal business hours, but I was able to open an RMA up over the internet. I had to download the Maxtor PowerMax software (the MaxBlast download had powermax, but it didn't work, so I had to download the separate powermax cd). I then ran Maxtor's diagnostic on the drive which had an error code that allowed me to open the RMA at the maxtor web-site. It took about 6 days to receive the replacment drive in the mail. But the replacement drive was a refurbished drive of the same model. I know that my drive was exactly 363 days old. The refurbished drive had the original label underneath the new refurbished label that you can still read under a strong light. The original manufactures date on the refurbished drive was only 10 months ago. I would have to say that this drive is not reliable if I have seen two drives of the same model that didn't even last 1 year.

My friend has the same drive, and he told me that the drive runs really hot, so he keeps a fan blowing on the drive at all times. Maybe the trick to extending the life of the drive is to keep a dedicated fan on it?

Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300 GB Internal Hard Drive

Strengths: Fast. Good brand. Huge storage capacity.

Weakness: None that I have noticed.

It was a tough choice between this drive and the raptor but in the end I decided I just needed more than 74gb of storage. All the online reviews I read suggested this drive was almost as fast as the raptor but with far more capacity. After I installed it I checked the speed with a diagnostic tool called sandra. I then did the same with the raptor hard drive on my fathers computer. The raptor was somewhat faster at 56 mb/s, but the diamondmax10 still blazed at 48 mb/s. Considering the 300gb capacity of the diamondmax10 versus 74gb for the raptor I conclude the maxtor gives more bang for the buck. Almost as fast, huge capacity. You decide. Im very happy with my purhase.

Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300 GB Internal Hard Drive

Strengths: Fast, dependable, good price per GB

Weakness: already full

This is a great SATA drive. I have completely filled it, erased it, and re-filled it while converting my CD's to MP3 and lossless formats.

I run this in a G5 mac and run disk utility to monitor it (and several other external drives) often. This drive never has ANY problems. It's the best drive I own.

For G5 owners, consider this over an external drive. The increased dependablility will likely pay off over the compromise on portability for many situations.

Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300 GB Internal Hard Drive

Strengths: 300gb, 16mb cache, NCQ, SATA

Weakness: no 4 pin-molex connection for power

Probably the best value for your buck, when considering size and performance. So far, reliable. Can't be heard over my case fans, with about the same level of noise as my Raptor. Note there is only a sata power connection, no molex connector. If comparing apples to oranges, this is not as fast as a Raptor, but as a storage drive, works flawlessly.

Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300 GB Internal Hard Drive

Strengths: 3 years manufacturers warranty

Weakness: 8 weeks to get a replacement

Mine arrived Dead On Arrival. The dealer didn't have any more (so he says) so I sent mine back to Maxtor for replacement. They quoted 2 weeks turnaround time on their web site and when I checked after this period they said it was 'ready to ship'. It still said this after another week so I phoned them to find out what was happening. They've run out and it will be another 6 weeks at least before they will get replacements in.

Is there a reliability issue here or am I jumping to conclusions?

Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300 GB Internal Hard Drive

Strengths: Size. Speed. Cost.

Weakness: Sound. Long-term reliability?

I bought this drive to be the data drive in my system. I have a WD Raptor 74GB for my primary program drive and wanted a capacious SATA data drive. This one fit the bill -- it is speedy and big (300 GB). I have only two small concerns about this drive -- despite the reviews, it is a little noisier than I expected and alse there are some concerns about its reliability (from the five platters and lingering concerns about reliabilitiy of other Maxtor drives). Still, I have not had any problems yet -- and I figure that a 3 year warranty plus an extra year since I bought on my gold credit card should cover replacing it for at least the next four years.

Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300 GB Internal Hard Drive

Strengths: Fast SATA Interface w/ 300GB of Storage. Excellent price to GB ratio!

Weakness: None!

Maxtor does it again with its DiamondMax line. This one of the few products that has the large 300GB capacity and the faster SATA interface. I use this drive primarily for DVD Authoring and Burning and it works great!

DiamnondMax 300Gb

Strengths: It is a great value for speed and size

Weakness: Not 3.0 ATAII

It was a great buy for my powermac g5 dual processor with 8gb of ram. The maxtor is now part of my striped RAID series, it is smooth, silent, fast and reliable, performance of the system now rock. I reccomend it at this price for value/size speed trade off. Larger sizes are more expensive per megabyte. Great is the NCQ feature only maxtor and seagate. Only issues is that it is "only" SATAI for speed while it is SATAII for NCQ feature fully implemented

Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300 GB Internal Hard Drive

Strengths: Fast. Good quality.

Weakness: A friend who helped install the drive into my computer said that he had to run some software to partition the drive properly because it was too big a drive.

I'm very happy with this brand. I have an old computer that still runs with a 40 gig Maxtor drive and it runs great. I haven't had this drive long enough to say if it will function as well, but my friend who is in the computer networking and repair profession swears by the brand.

You are most likely using an older motherboard (not sure how you have SATA though) as a BIOS update will allow large drives.

Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300 GB Internal Hard Drive

Strengths: Fast, reliable, no problems.

Weakness: none

Very pleased. Only problem was that I bought OEM and it took awhile to figure out. It was just the hard drive and nothing else. Somewhat different connection than I have seen before. Maxtor site was very helpfull.

Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300 GB Internal Hard Drive

Strengths: great storage device for data and videos. this hard drive is priced right. I like that it is very quiet as well

Weakness: Not a good idea to use as a single drive for you data and OS (like XP, etc); even if partion. Most OS only reads up to 130G. Might end up loosing data, if wants to chng OS in future

called maxtor for tech support sep-2004, and was told by their customer service rep that this item wasnt released in the US yet, since was release in some foregin country very limted tech support avail?? Be cautious of some Operating System limitations when using this 300G dive.

I have a 400 GiBy partition on my WinXP, and I have no problems at all.
So the above statement is false!

Maxtor's DiamondMax 10A Jewel Reviewed

The Maxtor DiamondMax 10 is not particularly new, but it is a popular drive. After releasing our reviews of the Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 and the Western Digital WD3200, our readers asked for benchmark numbers on Maxtor's current DiamondMax 10. From a technical point of view, the drive is the same as the MaXLine III that was presented in the second half of 2004; the only differences are the...
