Latitude D

Strengths: durable, performance, graphics card radeon 9000, lightweight powerful and decent battery life.

Weakness: None found so far.

I work for a very large company that purchases many types of notebooks based on user request. The D600 has been the best. My company to continue with Dell with their newer models.

Mediocre

Strengths: sturdy for the most part, average weight, mediocre customer service

Weakness: heat where the battery sits, a little heavy/bulky for my taste, flimsy keys/keyboard and power/volume buttons

As you can see above, it was difficult for me to think of strengths or weaknesses. That's because I consider this a very mediocre laptop. It's not great, but it's not bad either. I would call it "good" though. Yes...maybe not when it's making me angry, but for the most part.

The battery is under my left palm and is constantly hot, which is an irritation. In fact, it is downright painful sometimes. The physical parts have cracked on me now, but it is 4 years old so I can't say anything about that -- I would expect not many laptops would last this long (granted this is the only laptop I've ever owned, but this is what I've been told).

I had to replace the keyboard and power/volume buttons once (while still under warranty) because they are rather flimsy, but since then they have been fine.

I would not "praise" Dell's computer service , but it is again, mediocre. If you call and complain for a decent amount of time, they will take care of you. In no way do they go above and beyond. I had purchased the 3-year extended at-home service warranty and at first they always refused to do the at-home part...until I complained. They always caved in.

All in all, I can see why businesses would like to purchase this in bulk -- makes sense. Not so great for a personal use laptop though...I think you can get better for the money. If I start a business, I'll buy another Dell. Until then...I think I will move on and try some other companies...

horrible computer and customer service!!!!

Strengths: none

Weakness: they say they have good service but it is not.

i took one of these laptops apart it was horrible cheap to will never buy or sell or even tell any of my friends to buy a laptop. Now bill gates is trying to corner the market with vista so you have to upgrade. The program slows your computer down and when you call them for help i know more than they do. It adds no special features besides what they copied from mac. (i do not like mac either.) just stick with xp pro with sp2 intill they figure it out. USE BETTER PARTS NEXT TIME DELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In reading your review, you state that you took one of these computers apart. Was the computer working when you did this, and if it was why did you take it apart? Was it just to see what kind of parts they use inside their lower line of laptops? It seems that your problem is more with Windows Vista operating system then with Dell. Funny though you never mentioned anything about how the computer operated other then to state that they used cheap parts. All computer manufacturers use the least expensive parts they can in building their basic low grade computers. I have owned both HP and Sony laptops, and both Sony and Gateway desktops. All of them used basically the same parts. It sounds as though you had acquired a troubled Latitude and couldn't get it working so in your anger and inability to get it working you lashed out at Dell. I agree that Windows Vista has quite a few bugs and XP is a much better operating system. That falls on the shoulders of Microsoft, not Dell. I purchased two Dell Inspiron 3000 desktops in 05, which at the time were their lower line desktops. They are used everyday in a home based business. I have had zero issues with either of these computers. I wanted more computer later in 05 and ordered an Inspiron 9300 laptop with some upgrades. At the time I purchased it, I also purchased the extended warranty because I knew the laptop would be bounced around and take some beating in my travels. I had a problem with the motherboard and the hard drive went down both about the same time. Maybe the problems were connected, I'm not sure but when I called Dell support they took great care of me. Within 3 days a tech was knocking on my door with a brand new motherboard and a brand new hard drive. He took my laptop down and explained to me what he was doing as he performed his work. When he was done all I had to do was sign the paperwork and he left. My computer was back in operation with no glitches, and I have not had a single problem since then. I have recommended Dell to everyone I know. I am planning on buying another Dell laptop within the next six months. I have had nothing but a positive experience with Dell. There is one more thing that I have to question about your review. You stated you knew more about the computer or operating system then the Dell technicians. If you knew so much about the computer system that you "took apart" then why did you have to call Dell to begin with? Are you a computer technician, or just someone that "thinks" he is? Before you lash out against a great company like Dell, I think you'd do better to be truthful with yourself about your own limitations when it comes to taking computers apart that you don't know enough about to repair. My suggestion to you is leave the technical work to the "real" technicians. Have a great day!
