More of the usual v1 defects from Linksys

Strengths: Good features, good speed, rackmountable (ears included), Linksys QuickVPN is an easy-to-use SSL VPN (equivalent security and works more reliably through firewalls than IPSec VPNs).

Weakness: v1 hardware and 1.x firmware. Linksys makes great products, but they have yet to learn how to make their v1 products stable and fully-functional. Wait for the v1.1 or v2 model before buying.

After three days of fighting with the firewall configuration, I finally managed to convince Linksys that there was a problem. I could not get IPSec over UDP packets past the firewall unless I either disabled the firewall or added an "allow all from any to any" rule, which effectively disables the firewall. The problem persisted after exhausting every suggestion offered by Linksys Technical Support.

This kind of problem is common to most "version 1" products from Linksys. I have used Linksys consumer products since 1999 and recommended them professionally since 2003. This is the first business-series product of their's that I've purchased (aside from unmanaged switches). Normally I buy Cisco or Nortel gear for VPNs, but this was for a customer on a tight budget. I should have known better than to purchase a v1 product, but I figured that since I was buying a "business series" product that the build quality would be better. Unfortunately, I was proved wrong. Hopefully the RMA replacement will not have problems as well; however, I'm not optimistic.

Crap Support

Strengths: None

Weakness: Page 95 manual

Pg 95 of the manual states this router has a battery, it can only be replaced by LINKSYS, it is good for 1 to 2 years? I am returning my package before my system is down for weeks getting a battery replaced.

I really don't see this abut the battery on the page you stated, 95. Maybe I'm just not seeing it, what paragraph? This appears to software licensing, maybe the manual online is not the one that shipped with your unit and the latest version doen't have a battery. Just a thought.

Linksys RV082 8-port Fast Ethernet VPN Router-Dual...

Strengths: Solidly built; feature rich; able to handle high loads

Weakness: Price -- well when compared to residential equipment, but not when compared to commercial (this is somewhere between in my view)

A very nice unit... like most products it required a firmware update right out of the box. But my problem with residential grade routers was that the number of connections I was making through it was killing them -- this router doesn't seem to have any of those problems -- and the switch doesn't lock up with lots of local traffic either. If you're tired of problems with your residential gateway, and you can spare the money (this is not cheap -- you can buy 6 wireless gateways for the cost of 1 of these) it's well worth it. Certainly far from a full fledged Cisco router, but if the features are what you want/need -- and reliability is important -- this is your guy (and you can load balance to two internet connections as well)

Linksys RV082 8-port Fast Ethernet VPN Router-Dual...

Strengths: Easy to configure and works well as a small business router wiht a built in firewall.

Weakness: None known as of yet.

This router by CISCO seems to be the perfect fit for small businesses willing to spend a little bit of money with the advantage of a built in firewall and load balancing for 2 incoming internet lines.

Amazing - a GREAT product from Cisco Linksys

Strengths: VPN Router with QuickVPN software works PERFECTLY. Webpage configuration screen is good and has many features to tailor fit your enviornment.

Weakness: Must upgrade firmware out of the box immediately.

I have used linksys products for the past 10 years. I stick with Linksys but thats not after my share of issues with their products. All of their products work after alittle bit of TLC upfront.
This VPN router was flawless out of the box. It was actually a breeze and a pleasure to get it up and running.
HURRAY!

How many remote users do you have using the Linksys client software? Any connection issues after using it for a while? Speed of remote user satisfactory? How many concurrent connections using the Linksys client does it support?

Linksys RV082 8-port Fast Ethernet VPN Router-Dual...

Strengths: Very configurable, very stable, nice http firmware interface.

Weakness: Non that I have found

I originally purchase the WRV54G and it was junk. It would not talk to the DNS at all even after trying two brand new products and spending several hours on the phone with Linksys tech. support. The RV082 on the other hand worked flawlessly and there was never a need to call Linksys for support. I would highly recommend this router to anyone who is an advanced user.

Expensive Router - Breaks One Year After Purchase -...

Strengths: Not many other than a more user friendly interface and PPTP was simple.

Weakness: The stronger VPN technology is a pain to make work with windows and the quickvpn utility is a joke, but only the Linksys programmers are laughing.

Bought the product and a little over a year later it dies. Just get a solid red and solid green light. No IP assignment or anything else. Called support to be informed that this product is only warranted for 1 year. My client who purchased this thing spent about $350. That is ridiculous to spend that kind of money for a low-end router and have it die just after the warranty. I will never recommend another Linksys product to any of my clients.

Wow, What an Experience!

Strengths: This router is easy to setup, has a simple, but effective interface, and is great for small businesses. The VPN software that comes with the router is nice to use.

Weakness: VPN setup was a little difficult to setup at first. Once I was familiar with the software it got easier.

Although I have been using this router for 4 days now, it seems like a lifetime. I searched for a router for my business for a week and came to a conclusion that this is the one we wanted. Once we got it, setup was a snap. The firmware was current and the connections were easy to setup. We continued to setup the VPN (the router comes with software for that) and that proved to be a little challenging. With the help from a forum of linksys users the process went quickly and easily. We are just buying a second one so that we can setup a gateway to gateway which, from the looks of it, should be rather easy.

This router is great for someone who wants some extra power and has the hope to expand.

I was wondering if you got your second router and if so, how is the VPN working between the two? I made the unfortunate mistake of going with the WRV54G a year and a half ago. Also I was wondering what Linksys forum site did you get your info from to setup the VPN.

Thanks,

Ok router

Strengths: VPN function, 8 ports friendly and fexible interface.

Weakness: Linksys support is bad, expensive and no wireless.

I would love to give this router a 5 star, but the VPN function is hard to get working. There is no wireless so I had a really hard time to get a wireless router and this guy to work together. Linksys support picks up the phone fast, but guess what.....they don't know what they are talking about and they don't understand english well. I believe I got transfer to the India for support like almost all companies now a days, which I really hate. They don't even understand english well and they rely on a cheat sheet. I think their cheat sheet was not constructed good so maybe that is why. Overall if you get this router to work I believe it's a good router. The interface is friendly with rich features.

Linksys RV042

The Linksys RV042 is an advanced 4-port VPN router for handling the network needs of a small business. It has a Virtual Private Network (VPN) capability that creates encrypted tunnels through the Internet, thereby enabling up to 30 remote users to securely connect directly onto the office from a faraway location. Once logged into the network via the RV042, users can then access files, e-mail, and...
