Great Processor

Strengths: Speed Ease of installation Rock-stable

Weakness: None so far

I've purchased this processor for the use in my home system (primarily for image and video editing). Had absolutely not problems installing it into my Socket 939 MSI Neo-2 Platinum MoBo, with 3 GB of Corsair Value RAM. No problems with installation - just make sure that your computer is identified as "ACPI uniprocessor PC" in Windows Device Manager.

Even though I have not overclocked this processor (yet? ;) ), my system scores twice faster in multithreaded benchmarks than previous processor (AMD Athlon64 3000+ OC'ed to 2.4 GHz or so). Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premier are now blazing fast (and I sometimes work on 40+ Megapixel panoramas in Photoshop). All in all, I'm very happy camper right now :) .

Opteron 175 Pros, Cons, and general information.

Strengths: Decent power for the price, Unlocked cores make overclocking easier, Hyper Threading Technology makes it even MORE effective, integrated DDR SDRAM controller, lower-power processor, effecient, durable

Weakness: Price, not for the casual pc builder, Socket 939, no support for DDR2

Opteron's are very strong, efficient, and durable processors. Opteron's are cut from the same silicon wafers as AMD's FX series so they are designed to last. They are designed for server applications having a built in memory controller and Hyper Threading, although they also make Excellent processors for the PC enthusiast. The downside is that they are socket 939 and with the release of AMD's new X2 processors which support DDR2 they render 939 processors semi-obsilete in terms of ubgradeability. At the time of this review however, Id still recommend the Opteron 175 due to its decent price, high cpu frequency, and also the fact that it has a x11 clock multiplier making it great at over clocking. Highly recommended.

Otpy / FX60 is disguise

Strengths: The chip will overclock to FX60 or Opteron 185 speeds/ it also comes with a very good heatsink it has 4 heatpipes and a copper base and takes seconds to install for 235.00 which is what I payed

Weakness: none I can find

Fantastic chip cost around 1200 dollars a few years ago. The chip will overclock to FX60 or Opteron 185 speeds/ it also comes with a very good heatsink believe it or not it has 4 heatpipes and a copper base and takes seconds to install for 235.00 which is what payed I got a 500.00 chip and at least the equivalent of a 20.00 after market heatsink

Great Dual Core Processor at a Great Price

Strengths: Dual core, low temps, great at multitasking

Weakness: Lack of multi threaded program support.

I bought this processor as an upgrade over my AMD 64 3700+. My 3700+, while still fast, was not able to keep up with my evolving needs.

I mostly use my system for gaming and watching/recording HDTV. One the single core setup, every time I tried to multitask while recording HDTV content, the video and audio would skip. It would skip until whatever I was loading finished loading. At times the skipping would not go away and required me to restart the program to fix the problem. I had had enough of that, so this is why I decided to go dual core.

I chose the Opteron over the X2 series because the Opteron processors are of higher quality. They are rated to work continuously, and come from better silicon. This results in higher quality controls and better overclocking. For a slightly higher price I have a peace of mind.

From my initial testing, which is purely subjective, everything seems snappier. I can open a lot more programs without having to wait. The Opteron works as I had expected. The Opteron also runs a lot cooler on idle than did my San Diego core, though on load it seems to be running a tad hotter. It's not much, but I'll take it for the benefits I get.

AMD Opteron 175 Dual Core Processor

Strengths: It is a great functioning processor. It is a durable processor.

Weakness: It is mainly for use in server. So it would not work for someone trying to build their own pc.

Opteron is a great processor. AMD made a great product for the people that have their own servers. It is a durable and efficient processor. The price is also pretty great for the functions of the processor.

Honestly wriyaz, where are you getting or, on what are you basing your claim
that the Opteron 175 or 180, etc., would not work for someone contemplating building
a pc for home use with the Opteron 100 Series Dual Cores ? I've read so many positive
reviews on the application of this cpu for home use applications that I have been contemplating the 175 or 180 Opteron for an upgrade from a Athlon64 3700+ San Diego Core for my HTPC build. Have read many positive reviews at Newegg.com for home built
pc's using these Opterons.

I welcome the input of any info. you have which lends basis that they would not serve
well for a home build.

Great, Fast Dual Core Processor!

Strengths: dual core, fast, runs cool, multiple in a server rocks!

Weakness: none!

this processor is awesome! it is very very fast, and works great in a server environment with multiple processors. This thing runs fast, runs cool, and has great performance. I have built several systems and have had several customers order this processor and they love it!

AMD Opteron 175

The AMD Opteron 175 is a mid-range, although slightly outdated, processor for use in 1-way servers and workstations. Although AMDs current server CPUs offer at least four cores, the Denmark-based Opteron 175 features only two, but still incorporates 64-bit technology, as well as an integrated memory controller and HyperTransport. The 90nm unit clocks in at 2.2 GHz and features a 2x1MB L2 cache....
