Network Associates VirusScan v.8.0Strengths: Reputation Weakness: Unstable, Constant Advertisements, Unacceptable/Non-Existant Tech Support We have sold and recommended McAfee Anti-Virus for nearly 10 years, WAS a great product, HAD great support for problems. I have been begging for effective Dealer/IT Professional level support, told to do everything from service disabling to reinstalling and trying the "online" version. Same issues, lock-ups, error messages, "orphaned" system resources, and to make matters worse, broken promises of continued research of our (and client's) issues. These guys have really gone down hill, even the support isn't handled in the US anymore. We went with Trend Micro... 90% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Network Associates VirusScan v.8.0Strengths: It give you a sense of security Weakness: It's a false sense! It came preloaded on my Dell computer. I assumed that if it came from Dell like that, it must be pretty good stuff: So I bought a years subscription. I noticed a while back that my computer was acting sluggish, mostly while online. Then it seemed like I always had something running in the background. I took it in for a tune-up, this helped for a little while. They didn't look for virus as I assured them that I kept my anti-virus up to date and scanned frequently, which I did. Turns out that my problem was a boot generic virus. If McAfee was any good, how'd I get it? 90% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Network Associates VirusScan v.8.0
Strengths: Name
Weakness: Not as good as the new Professional version for a few more dollars with more features. Uses too many resources and make too many registry entries and - better hope it installs properly the first time.
They were told during Beta testing of the resource hogging, and excessive registry entries caused by the online Security Center's subscription verification.
No wonder they want to sell a cleaner for reinstalls.
They were also told of the Security Centers inaccurate analysis, using lit up bars, to scare users into purchasing more programs that are un-wanted and un-needed and the "beg" links which are no better than getting unsolicited sales calls on your private phone line or cell phone - only worse on your PRIVATE computer.
I had to reinstall the product several times and finally the OS as I could not remove those entries it should have removed from my old McAfee 7.0 Pro and its own so that it would allow me to register the product for updates and scan properly.
Clearly a superior product would have been produced had they only upgraded 7.0 Home and Professional and not gone to only using the Online Security Center versions.
They've forced me back to Norton or to try Trend Micro. I only left Norton because VS 7 Professional was a superior product at the time but they have done away with it and I previously had, bad experiences with McAfee's 4x and 5x products which also hogged resources badly causing freezes requiring restarts and I am not interested in returning to that route.
Only time will tell how well this one will protect, which it should do that well at least.
