D-Link Express EtherNetwork DI-704UP Broadband Router

Strengths: Low cost print server/router. Feature rich. Easy setup/documentation. Excellent router/firewall. Small. Great speed for the price. SPI/Dynamic DNS/ICSA/VPN pass through/Mulitple IPsec

Weakness: Printer Server for Windows only. Not every printer will work. (Dlink support website has a list of compatible printers) When downloading a large file from the internet the print job will fail.

I really like this router. I had the DI604 but returned it to get the DI 704up for the print server. I do a lot of side work and usually go with Linksys. At first price got me to look at DLink over Linksys. While I had the DI604 I was impressed with it features and performance.

I didn't like having to keep the computer that my printer was attched to on all the time; so that the other computers could print to it. The DI 704up solved the problem for my HP DJ895cxi. One feature of my printer is that it will turn on if I print. The 704up's print server even works with that feature of my printer.

Print servers all by them selves cost $50+, going from DI604 to DI704up was only $20 (and I have less clutter). The DI704up is a great deal.

NOTE: Check the compatibility list at linksys for your printer. However, my printer was not on the DLINK list but its cousin was, the HP DJ890.

D-Link Express EtherNetwork DI-704UP Broadband Router

Strengths: Getting the D-Link 704UP router up and running was by far the easiest hardware project I have ever had. It flat out worked out of the box without editing any options. Very impressive!

Weakness: Have not found any as of yet in my home environment.

From the time I opened the box, glossed over the install info, hooked up the cables and followed the suggested power up sequence I was online and surfing in just over 7 minutes. Plus, after I tested out a couple of WEB sites, I decided to cable up my old computer and see if it would be able to share my Cox Internet connection. No problems, had the second computer online and surfing at just over the 10 minute mark.

Wow! I am really impressed with this router. Two computers up and running in just over 10 minutes without doing any router setup at all.

After loading the print server drivers and following the setup instructions, neither of my two computers was able to communicate with my Cannon i960 printer (which is not on the list of approved printers at the D-Link WEB site). However, I was able to get everything working properly by going to each computer's printer preferences and disabling offline use. Changing that option did the trick. Having the ability of both computers to share my new Cannon i960 printer is very cool!

Also tested the firewall capabilities and the two testing sites I used reported no open ports. As a side note, this router did not slow down my connection speed whatsoever, I'm still seeing over 3 Gig Bit/Sec download speeds. I would recommend this router to anyone.

D-Link Express EtherNetwork DI-704UP Broadband Router

Strengths: Worked with my HP Photosmart 7900 series printer. The Linksys PSUS4 I've used before wouldn't.

I don't know how good the WAN and firewall are. I'm only using this as a network switch and print server for 2 computers. Just wish the Linksys would have worked because it's a little smaller on the desk.
