Sony Burner DRX810UL

Strengths: fast burner 16x takes bout 5 minutes to burn 4.7gb, comes with two different types of wires, firewire and usb2.0

Weakness: loud when burning at max speed, plastic casing

This burner is really nice. Very nice, sleek look. Can be put upright or lay flat. Comes with stand for support. Writes a DVD in approximately 5 minutes. No real complaints about this nifty burner. Very happy with purchase.

Sony DRX-810UL External Dual Layer DVD Writer

Strengths: Setup was a breeze. Sleek design.

Weakness: I have found no weaknesses.

Had purchased a Lite-On DVD Writer, but had many failed copies, also my 2.0 USB card (for my laptop)would not find the drive. So purchased the Sony and works great. No failed copies at all. Plug and Play with Windows 2000 and was on my way. I did not have to install any drivers or updates. If you want a reliable writer then this is the one for you.

DRX-810UL EXTERNAL DUAL LAYER DVD+-RW WRITER

Strengths: Very easy to install and understand, even for a 64 year-old non-geek. I am not into copying music, movies, etc. Just want to backup precious family pictures onto ONE or TWO DVDs--not 25 or 30 CDs!

Weakness: None that I can tell

After reading reviews of this and similar products on PriceGrabber, I realized it was absolutely necessary to get a product that included cables and good software. So I am grateful for the "reviews." This product, in addition to being priced reasonably and from a reputable manufacturer, had all of "the above." I am very pleased and would recommend it to anyone.

Incredibly Easy

Strengths: Easy to set up. Easy to use.

Weakness: Can be a bit noisy as compared to an internal model.

I wanted a DVD burner that I could move between the 3 desktop computers in my house. I chose Sony due to my great experience with an internal model I own. I was not disappointed. It is truely a plug and play device. I burned my first DVD with it within a half hour of setting it up. My only concern is that it's a bit noisier than a comparable internal model which will take a bit of getting used to. Other than that, I highly recommend the DRX-810UL.

Best Burner I have Owned

Strengths: Burns Fast, Burns on any media without problems, Vertical standing, attractive, stylish, easy set up, Awesome drive

Weakness: Nero Software has many bugs, recommend other burning software.

I have owned various drive prvious to this one and I have experience a few flaws from them. Once I purchased this burner I have had zero problems. This drive is just plain awesome & I have no regrets purchasing this burner. This drive quickly burns at fast speeds, I have experienced max burning on all media brands. I recommend this drive to all newbies and the experienced. This drive has done everything I have asked it (with all media)and I can not express enough to go out and buy this drive; the only burner you will ever need.

Great burner

Strengths: It's very sleek and pretty. I like that the eject button is at the top...easy access.

Weakness: None so far.

This burner is sleek and heavy, and it burns very well. I've had no coasters so far. I don't think it makes any more noise than my Lite-on did, and I was happy that it came with both a USB 2.0 and an i-link cable. I think it will be worth the $120 that I paid for it. It came with the full version of Nero, so that's nice. My other burner just had Nero Express with it.

Best external DVD writer

Strengths: Nice looking, easy to install and use, fast write speed.

Weakness: Hear a noise when load a disk into the drive, and the disk start to spin.

"Stylish", that is the first impression when I saw this SONY DRX-810 external DVD writer. This drive stands out from dozen other writers when I shopped in the store, although it cost couple dollers more than others, but I choose this one without any hesitate. Once open the package, you will see a sliver color box, much better than the other ugly black drivers. I like the mirror cover very much, I could look my face in it.

The writer is easy to install, just plug it with the USB cable, my PC recongize it without any problem, I did not instll any driver or programs that come with the driver (I have nero and easy media creator installed in my PC).

The writing speed in good, I copy 3.8G files into a DVD+R disk, and it only took less than 8 minutes, pretty fasy than my old NEC internal DVD writer.

Only drawback is the noise, when you load a disk into the driver and it start to spin, you will hear a noise, but it become quiet after a few second.

Sony - it is the one and only

Strengths: price, small footprint, included software

Weakness: None

The drive is small, stylish, easily installed and takes up little space in the vertical position. Although it's a little loud when the drive is working, it reads and writes CD-R media up to 48x, DVD+/-R up to 16x. It is capable of burning double-layer DVDs allowing you to have twice the capacity of a standard DVD. You can hook it up to your PC with either the included firewire cable of USB 2.0 cable. The setup took less than 10 minutes and was backing up my data in no time.

The Nero software included is very extensive with an interface that is intuitive and makes it easy to figure out how to accomplish your task.

Overall, great external DVD/CD drive for watching video, listening to music and backing up data. Good software that's intuitive and functional with no real need for additional software. Excellent value -- bought it $100 and got a $30 mail-in rebate from Sony.

I cant stand drives that are loud as hell while watching movies and just reading the disk. Burning noise is expected. How is the noise level on this drive?

Excellent External Burner

Strengths: Very slim and Rich looking

Weakness: The only drawback is, It gives little bit of noice while burning. I HOPE THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE IF ALL OTHER QUALITIES ARE GOOD.

I had LG DVD Burner before this SONY. It was giving lot of noise while writing DVDs and some times I noticed scratches on DVDs after burning.
So, I have returned it & purchased SONY next week. First I was in doubt whether SONY also will be like LG.
But when I installed and started using SONY, DVDs copied with safe & with good quality.
Installation also very easy and quick.
As it includes NERO software, you can use different options to make DVDs and Cd's also.
I would recommend this to everyone who are looking for safe and good DVD burner.
You can get this within 100$ and this is the BEST burner of all.

DRX-810UL

Strengths: Fast and reliable. Firewire 400 and USB interfaces. Looks great.

Weakness: None.

I already had Toast Titanium, so I hopped on a good deal for the DRX-810UL (vs the 810UL/T which includes Toast 6 for Mac). Drive works fine with both my desktop (Dell WinXP Pro) and laptop (Powerbook G4 OS X Tiger). Setup was easy, especially on the Powerbook. I am using it primarily to back up photos and music. It has burned everything quickly and reliably so far, including less expensive bulk media.

Shipping Damage

Strengths: Aesthetic

Weakness: Service Support

Purchased Sony DRX-810UL in January. Early June loud noises when inserting a disc. Sony’s storage.support@am.sony.com no help. Returned to Sony for repair. After 5 days in their possession, Sony returned the unit to me in damaged condition denying warranty. Damage caused by sharp metallic object blow. Returned in original ship carton. DVD Drive undamaged when shipped to Sony. Shipping carton & peanuts surrounding the unit were undamaged (verified by UPS). Last denial of warranty result of letter to Howard Stringer, CEO Sony Electronics, Inc.

Sony has a winner!

Strengths: Very easy to install & easy to use.

Weakness: None yet.

This drive has a sleek design and looks impressive. It writes both + & - DVD's with ease. I have had no problems playing the DVD's created on this drive on any other DVD player I have tried.
